Targa Florio was the name an open road endurance auto race held in the mountains of Sicily near Palermo. Founded in 1906,it was the oldest sports car racing event and part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973. Porsche was the most successful marque with total of 11 overall Targa Florio victories. The marque competed continuously from 1956-1973 wining the last Targa Florio with 911 Carrera RSR.
Porsche chose the name Targa Florio for its new concept for the first safety cabriolet in the world with a fixed safety roll bar. The concept car for a while was named “ 911 Flori” until Harald Wagner head of domestic sales asked, “why don’t we just call it Targa?”
